    Mixing and matching: Bad Idea

Posted by Rusty Ayers on 28th Jan 2026

I ordered this sack as part of a suit. It's nicely made in a heavier weight of wool broadcloth than the wool flannel used in uniform blouses, and fit me well after I provided my custom sizes. My mistake was in mixing quality levels; I had ordered this in solid brown to go with an Excelsior shawl-collar vest I'd had previously bought from SUM. When the standard-quality sack coat arrived the brown was a noticeably different color than the brown of the vest. My bad, and lesson learned: don't mix standard pieces and Excelsior pieces expecting them to match, because they are made with different quality woolens and thus completely different dye lots. If you're building a "ditto suit," go with one quality-level, and preferably order all the pieces at the same time. My thanks to Chris for allowing me to exchange the blouse and order a new one. SUM's quality service shines through once again!

Received the Tweed #12. Looks great. I had the sleeves shortened/hemmed.
