These trousers are being offered now and compliment our new later 19th Century sack coat.  The trousers are appropriate for the latter part of the 19th century, approximately 1870 all the way to the dawn of the 20th century.  They're made with suspender buttons as well as rear adjustment belt, and are offered with rear hip pockets as an option.  They feature top opening mule ear style pockets, which are different from our classic trousers that feature side seam pockets.  Available in a variety of wool, wool/cotton jeans cloth, denim, as well as linen.

*most sizes are not in stock and will be made upon order, so please take that into account when ordering.

Sizing information:  Like all of our trousers, these trousers are sized at NATURAL WASTE size, which is your true waist at the navel (bully button).  That usually will not be what your modern jean size is.  Jean sizes have "vanity" inches built in, so please measure your waist with a tape and make sure of your actual natural waist size before you order.  For example, if you wear a modern jeans size of 38, your natural waist might be a 40 or 42.

    Pants

Posted by Jack Swanson on 9th Oct 2025

Very nice pants that fill a void in the recreating world. Seems there aren’t many options for the 1870s to 1890s interpretations out there when it comes to historically correct. Either too early or too modern. It’s nice to see something correct. These pants are well put together. The material is not a modern like thick heavy denim. Softer with more drape and feels and looks like something different than “jeans.” The sizing seemed right on also, although I wish it would have arrived sooner as I lost weight in the interim. Buttons looked nice and well placed. Neat option with the back pockets. I got two. Seems to give the pants a lot more style. They are looose in the legs but I’m assuming that was typical of the period. All in all I would say great buy.

    Black wool pants

SUM was highly recommended by a Tombstone friend. I looked a long time for quality, period correct pants to match a frock coat. I received top quality service and quality. I had these evaluated by a curator at the state museum with him giving nothing but positive evaluation. Thanks Chris, great work!

    1870s-1890s trousers

Great quality, I dress “historical” day to day not just for events, most of my things are second hand so I’m excited to have something new, comfortable, and well fitting.

My trousers arrived today and filled my expectations. Fantastic attention to detail and excellent workmanship. Nice cotton denim fabric. Interesting details on trousers differing from earlier period trousers. Nice work SUM.

Fills in a need in the hobby, especially for those of us now doing more post-CW impressions. Fits well & I am very pleased with purchasing these. Thanks again for making them available!

Outstanding, in or out of the Past

Sublimely comfortable, well constructed and fitted in high(-waisted) style. Tweed is the right weight for year 'round. Lining, buttons, stitching are top notch. I'm a "civilian" not a reenactor, but I highly recommend SUM's clothing as one of the best options for "historical" mensware.
