Lt. S. Millett Thompson was born in Barnstead, New Hampshire, and served with distinction in the 13th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. Enlisting on August 13, 1862, Thompson was promoted to second lieutenant on June 10, 1863, and played a significant role in the Civil War, particularly during the Siege of Petersburg. He was wounded severely during the Siege and was discharged from the infirmary in October 1864. After the war, Thompson lived in Providence, Rhode Island, until his death in 1911.
