The Tract Journal, November 1862

Yes!  You can have a reproduction Civil War era newspaper that IS NOT a Harper's Weekly or Leslie's Illustrated!!  The Tract Journal was a newspaper that was published during the war by the American Tract Society, the group that provided millions of pages of reading material to both Union and Confederate troops during the war through the United States Christian Commission, colporteurs, chaplains, and in packages from home.  Furthermore, the American Tract Society sent thousands of tracts and papers across the lines to the Confederate troops, as well.

Our reproduction offered on light weight newsprint paper, not the thick paper often seen in Harper's and other reproductions.  The paper has news stories of the day, scientific information, Gospel stories and anecdotes, and more!  A great item for the knapsack or period mail call or period sutlers.

    Great alternative

This is a great alternative to a Harper's. The articles are entertaining, and it is really neat reading the same things that they did in 1862. A great addition for a living historian!

    A Worthwhile Read

Posted by Charles Lee on 14th Jul 2016

For more than 50 years, I've enjoyed the 1828-1865 published works of the American Tract Society. The Tract Journal meets the high standards of the ATS' publications, and is an interesting read. The fundamental philosophy of the ATS, placing the best Christian reading material in the hands of the population, was accomplished through a variety of means, including The Tract Journal. The only thing I did not like about my transaction with South Union Mills, was that they don't have 20 different dates of the publication. It is a most enjoyable read, suitable and entertaining for the non-Christian as well as the Christian. It's a true delight!
