Original Handkerchief in Ohio Historical Society collection

This handkerchief is a reproduction of the handkerchief carried by Israel Taylor McCowen (1841-1864), 12th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, who was killed at the Battle of Lynchburg on June 17, 1864.  McCowen held the rank of First Sergeant when he died at Lynchburg.

The handkerchief is 100% silk and measures 19 x 24 inches.

The 12th Ohio was organized at Camp Dennison, OH, in May 1861.  They served in western Virginia until August 1862 when it was transferred to the Army of the Potomac.  The regiment participated in the battles of Second Bull Run, South Mountain, and Antietam.  In the fall of 1862 the regiment was transferred to western Virginia, again, and did efficient service until the spring of 1864 when it joined Hunter's expedition to Lynchburg, VA.  The regiment then mustered out of service July 11, 1864.

The original of this handkerchief is in the Ohio Historical Society and this reproduction was made with their permission and cooperation.

Another excellent handkerchief! Collect them all and toss out those blue and red gas station bandannas. Yuck!Or use them as cleaning patches.
